TEACHING SPEAKING

Speaking is learned in two broad contexts: foreign language and second language situations. A foreign language context is one where the target language is not the language of communication in the society (.e.g. learning English or Japan). Learning skill is very challenging for students, because they have very few opportunities to get the target language outside classroom.

A second language context is one when the target language is the language of communication in the society. Second language learners include refugees, international students, and immigrants. To train the students learning a language by speaking method, there are some ways or techniques that usually use in the classroom:

  • Information Gap is a useful activity in which one person has information that the other lacks. They must use the target language to share that information.
  • Jigsaw Activities are bidirectional or multidirectional information gap. Each person in a pair or group has some information the other person need. For example one student could have a timetable for train travel in Canada. Another could have the map of Canada. Without showing each other the visual information, they must speak English to plan a one week trip.
  • Role-plays are also excellent activities for speaking in the relatively safe environment of the classroom. In this technique the students are given particular role in the target language.
  • Simulations are more elaborate than role-plays. In a simulation, props and documents provide a somewhat realistic environment for language practice. For example train the language, in language lesson about the grocery store, the teacher might bring the “products” for the students to buy. A check counter would be set up for the students to practice transactional speaking with the cashier.
